Military lauds AEPB on environmental cleanliness

 

The Commanding Officer of 7 Guard Battalion Lt Col. Mukhtar Daroda commended AEPB for helping to avert a looming epidemic caused by a blown out sewer manhole which was spewing offensive odour and impending disease all over the place especially in Lungi Barracks.
He made this known recently during a courtesy visit to AEPB with his team in Abuja.
Daroda expressed concern over the increasing problem of waste management in the Barracks due to increasing population of between 800 to 1000 households in some cases’ and called on AEPB to undertake an assessment of the prevailing situation in the barracks and advice accordingly on what to do to ensure a clean, and safe environment for soldiers and their wards.
“The AEPB was a very important partner in the business of making the city safe and free of miscreants he promised to build on the existing relationship between the two which is a symbiotic, adding that the primary goal of my visit is to develop synergy with key institutions within the territory having just assumed his new post and also appreciate the good work AEPB is doing in Abuja and also in the military barracks where the problem of waste management is on the rise,” he stressed.
Daroda equally commended the efforts of the FCT Minister Malam Muhammad Musa Bello towards developmental issues especially as it concerns completion of on-going projects in the FCT where various contractors have been busy.
He pledged to assist the AEPB on the issue of enforcement of its laws and problems being faced by the Board in clearing the city of illegal structures and preventing criminal activities such as theft of manhole covers which pose grave threat to pedestrians and motorists as well as serve as hiding places for criminals.
He advised the Board to endeavor to notify the military when moving to volatile areas so we can beef up your strength and not risk the life of your people who are doing a good job’ noting that ‘vandalism of public properties or stealing them is unfortunate and he promised that the military would keep its ‘eyes and ears open to reduce the scourge to the barest minimum’.
“The issue of revenue generation and accumulated debts from different organizations which has limited the Board’s capacity to carry out its duties effectively, the Commanding Officer who agreed that know organization can function effectively without payment for services rendered promised to forward their concern to the appropriate authorities for speedy attention.
The HOD Administration and Supplies, Mr. Jacob Areo who received the team on behalf of the Director AEPB, Baba Shehu Lawan, expressed delight at the visit and emphasized that environmental duty was an all-encompassing one that touches on the general wellbeing of residents.
He identified some of the problems of maintaining a sustainable environment as attitudinal, societal and intentional adding that AEPB contends with various forms of nuisances ranging from waste nuisance to human nuisances in the form of illegal squatters in unapproved shanties that dot the city, hawkers, miscreants, destitute who engage in all sorts of nefarious activities including defacement of the city and damage of public facilities.
He revealed that the collaboration between the military and other security agents has been key to the successes so far recorded and implored the military to be prepared to assist with more men if called upon as the areas of responsibility for the AEPB is expanding by the day.
