Minimum wage: Civil servants commence mobilisation for strike, Ngige summons emergency meeting

Nigerian civil servants have commenced mobilisation of members in preparation for an action over government foot-dragging in the implementation of the national minimum wage.

Already, a circular has been issued to all state councils of the Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria (ASCSN) to begin mobilisation in readiness for the action.

The circular, dated October 7, 2019 addressed to all state councils of the association, obtained by Blueprint said they are to commence mobilisation for a nationwide strike in line with the directives of NLC and TUC.

The circular, which was signed by the Secretary General, Comrade Alade Bashir Lawal, said following the “stalled negotiation of the  consequential adjustment in respect of the new national minimum wage including the directives by the leadership of TUC,NLC and the Joint Council, you are to  commence serious mobilisation preparatory to the looming strike action.

“Unit chairman, secretary and treasurer in all the MDAs are also invited to the emergency meeting organised by the ASCSN, scheduled for Wednesday 9, October 2019 to finalise the arrangement,” he said.

The meeting between government and the Joint National Public Service Negotiation Council (JNPSNC) trade side broke down due to failure of the both parties to come to consensus on the consequential adjustment of the N30.000 minimum wage.

While labour are demanding for 29 percent for grade levels 07 to 14 and 24 percent for grade levels 15 to 17, government on her part is offering 11 percent for grade levels 07 to 14 and 6.5 percent for grade levels 15-17.

Meanwhile, Blueprintcan authoritatively report that the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige has summoned labour for a meeting in office today Wednesday 9, to find a way to resolve the issues surrounding the minimum wage impasse.

A labour leader who does not want his name in print, told Blueprint that the minister invited organised labour for a meeting in his office by 11 am.
