Minister advocates improved livestock production

Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Alhaji Mohammed Sabo Nanono has advocated the need for improved livestock production in the country by the Animal Association of Nigeria and the Nigeria Institute of Animal Science.

The minister made this case Tuesday during the opening ceremony of the 8th Animal Science Association of Nigeria and Nigeria Institute of Animal Science (ASAN NIAS) Joint annual meeting and induction ceremony held at International Conference Center (ICC), Ogurube layout, Umuahia.

He stated that this year’s conference with the Theme “Animal Agricultural: Anchor for sustainable Economic and Human development in Nigeria’ which he said will chat the course for concrete resolution and road map to consolidate on the gains of the past years and provide the nation with abundant possibilities in a vibrant livestock industry.

He commended NIAS as well as ASAN for putting the meeting together and for steady progress emanating from conceited professional effort in reposting the livestock sub- sector in Nigeria for greater heights.

On his part, the President Animal Science Association of Nigeria, Pastor Taiwo Adeoye said the huge potential and contribution of livestock sub-sector to national productivity as contained in the country’s medium-term development strategy is guided by the economic recovery and growth plan aimed at increasing national productivity and achieving sustainable diversification of production.

In an interview with the Chairman Local Organizing Committee, Professor Udo Herbert of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Umudike, Abia state said the essence of the conference is to bring together the crème la crème of Animal Agriculture in Nigeria adding that the executive secretary of Tertiary Education Trust fund (TETfund) is a member of the association.
