Minister assures on disabled persons’ inclusion in devt issues

The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Hajiya Sadiya Umar Farouq, has stated that the ministry had mapped out strategies for the celebration of this year’s International Day of Persons with Disabilities.

The minister disclosed that this Monday in Abuja during the celebration of the Day with the theme: Promoting the Participation of Persons with Disabilities and Their Leadership; Taking Action on the 2030 Development Agenda.

Hajiya Farouq, who was represented by the director, rehabilitation, in the ministry, Mrs. Nkechi F. Onwukwe, said life issues are continuous; as far as we are alive it is a continuous one. As they come up, we keep on dealing with them  until we are sure to a greater extent that persons with disabilities are included in the issues of development and as well as ensuring that they are self-reliant.”

“The target percentage given to us by the act is not realised. Before we had two percent but now we’ve been given five percentages,” she said.

She also said almost 250 names of graduates had been submitted to the Federal Service Commission for those that were qualified to be employed, adding that, “The process is on; we are also following through advocacy to ensure that it is achieved.”

On access to buildings, the minister said “it is a multi-central issue. Letters have been written to the Federal Ministry of Works, Housing to ensure that all buildings are compliant.”
