Minister inaugurates c’ttee on health sector

With less than 692 days left for Nigeria to join other countries to meet the Millennium Develop Goals (MDGs), the Minister of Health, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu, has inaugurated a six man committee through the Saving One Million Life (SOML) initiative, to improve the health sector in Nigeria.

Chukwu, who performed the inauguration yesterday in Abuja, said the federal government had expressed readiness to track the progress and results in maternal and child care in the health care sector through Saving One Million Lives (SOML) initiatives, adding that the essence of the inauguration “is also to focus on Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission (PMTCT), malaria, malnutrition, tuberculosis and other ailments.”

Chukwu gave the committee six terms of reference for tracking of the SOML initiative, and read out the duties and responsibilities of each member.
He said: “The Project Manager’s responsibility is to chair statutory management meetings which should hold once every month; ensure effective collaboration among government agencies and linkage to development partners; articulate progress and status of SOML initiatives and interface with the Project Delivery

Unit (PDU) and serve as a liaison with implementing agencies and departments.”
In his remarks, the Project Manger of the committee, Dr. Kayode Afolabi, pledged the committee’s readiness to wok and marshal commitment from stakeholders towards achieving the goals of the SOML initiative.
