The Minister of State for Aviation, Senator Hadi Sirika, yesterday expressed dismay that new international terminal building at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (NAIA) Abuja which was set to be ready December 2017, did not meet the deadline as expected due to lack of procurement.
Senator Sirika, during a visit to the new terminal airport in Abuja, while lamenting about the slow space of the terminal building at the estimation cost N61.2 billion in partnership with the Nigerian government and ‎China Civil Engineering and Construction Company (CCECC), said the project needs an additional 400 million dollars.
According to him, the non availability of procurement has distrupt the master plan of the new terminal Airport project.
He assured that the Federal Government is committed to get the project delivered.
Also, ‎the project manager and contractor, China Civil Engineering and Construction Company (CCECC), Mr Kelvin Lee, told newsmen that the work is already 87% percent done.
He further said the building will not be operational until an upgrade is done on the power and water facilities as the existing plants cannot serve the new terminal building effectively.
He explained that if the necessary funds are provided, the power plants and upgrade should be ready.
According to him, about 8MVA capacity power is needed and right now, the existing power cannot provide that and we cannot go ahead to test some of the things installed because of the low capacity of power.
“All these things need to be done, if power and water are provided, the building will be commissioned by the end of next year,” he assured.
