MMSD tasks MIREMCO on synergy

Minister of state, Mines and Steel Development Dr Uchechukwu Ogah has called   on  chairmen   of   Mineral   Resources   and   Environmental  Management Committee   (MIREMCO) to build synergy   between every tier of government.

This he said will boost rapid development of mineral resources, ensure  job   creation and generate revenue for national development.

Speaking at the Annual General Meeting (AGM) for MIREMCO chairmen held at Rock View Hotel Royale, Abuja, he said the forum was timely as it x-rayed the mineral development quagmire between states and ministry.

He decried decline in the ministry’s revenue generation adding that the forum would help chart way to resolve resource conflicts in the sector for economic growth.

Ogah urged the committee to  build a formidable platform of 36 or 37 members, which should be responsible for resolving issues affecting mineral development to ensure economic and national growth.

According to him, both ministers of the ministry runs an open door policy and will interact with members of the team to foster ways of enhancing the ministry.

In his contribution, the permanent secretary, Mr Edet Sunday Akpan, appreciated their efforts in developing the sector and assured them of necessary support. Adding that the ministry is ready to involve them into its planned – elaborate sensitisation programme that cuts across all the states meant to inform the stakeholders on the need to obey mining Acts.

He stated the need for the committee to consider acquiring a placing laboratory equipment to know the exact value of minerals in the country, adding that government would look into it, since it will add value to the business of the sector.

He also urged them to form clusters for mining activities to enable them seek funds from Bank of Industry.
