Mobil acquires right to build 575 mw power plant

Mobil Producing Nigeria Unlimited (MPN) has been issued a licence to build a 575megawatt power station in Eket – AkwaIbomState.
The license was issued by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) after all stipulated requirements were met by the company.
The Vice Chairman of NERC, MuhammedLawal Bello,described the development as a significant stride by the company.
He assured thatNERC’s mandate was to ensure availability and reliability of electricity in the country.

Also speaking, Chairman/Managing Director, MPN Unlimited, Mark R. Ward, described the occasion as a momentous one that had been long in coming.
He expressedgratitude to NERC for what he called “the spirit of collaboration,” saying further that “the project provides a unique opportunity in the sense that there is ready fuel supply and connection to the grid.’’

This development brings the number of major oil companies already playing major roles in the electricity industry in Nigeria to three, with the two others being Shell and Agipwhich are already contributing 642 mw and 480 mw respectively, to the national grid.
