Money laundering: Shekarau supporters storm Kano EFCC office

Hundreds of supporters of former Kano state Governor, Malam Ibrahim Shekarau, yesterday besieged the premises of Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Kano in solidarity when the former governor. Shekarau was invited to the office of the EFCC along with former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Alhaji Aminu Wali and Engr. Mansur Ahamed.

The supporters defi ed the scorching sun and the rigours of Ramadan fasting and arrived the commission’s zonal headquarters in their numbers at 2pm, chanting anti-Magus slogan and pouring invectives on the person of the President on what they described as witch-hunting orchestrated to tarnish the political career of the former governor. Our correspondent, who was at the Commission’s zonal office in Kano, reports that some of the governor’s staunch supporters were seen wearing gloomy faces, with many of them shedding tears, calling onthe President to shelve the on-going probe for what they described asthe handiwork of the governor’s enemies, hell-bent on destroying his political career.

Even the security operatives manning the EFCC’s gate were not spared from the abusive language of the embattled Shekarau die-hard supporters at the time they made futile effort to force their way into the office complex of the Commission, to catch a glimpse of the manthey revered and widely considered as their political mentor and rolemodel. Anxious reporters who kept vigil at the commission premises couldnot gain entry into the office complex despite entreaties but were able to interview the former governor’s counsel, Barr Abdul Adamu Fagge, who told reporters that his client was at the commission on invitation, even though he had been granted bail on self recognition. “We are here to honour the invitation extended to our client in order to ascertain whether he would remain in the custody of the EFCC or not,” he said. The former governor together with Ambassador Aminu Wali and Engr. Mansur Ahamed, are expected to appear at a Federal High Court, Kano today on a six-count charge slammed on them by the commission.
