Motorists stranded in Lokoja over floods

Hundreds of motorists plying Lokoja – Abuja highway yesterday suffered untold hardship as the road was heavily flooded with water making it difficult for them to pass through the ever busy road.

The flooded area is located around Nataco junction at Seriki Numan village about a kilometre to Lokoja metropolis.

The flood was caused by a heavy downpour that lasted for over six hours in Lokoja and its environs yesterday morning in addition to water falls from the mountains which might have led to the flooding.

When our correspondent visited riverine areas like Adankolo, Gadumo and Ganaja village, it was observed that the water level of the River Niger is now at its peak as the bank of the river has been over flown raising fears of the flood disaster that happened in 2012 that ravaged nine local government areas in Kogi state.

Motorists coming from Abuja and those from the South-south and South-east parts of the country were stranded around Okumi village and Nataco junction, Lokoja.

However, a resident of the flooded area, Malam Usman Tijani, said “there is no cause for alarm,” assuring that the water “will recede in few hours time.”

He, however, called on the state government to take a proactive measure in order to prevent the repeat of 2012 flood disaster that affected nine local government areas.
