Mpape earth tremor: Abuja is safe – NGSA

Following the alert of an earth tremor within some parts in Abuja the Director-General, Nigerian Geological Survey Agency (NGSA) Alex Nwegbu has said that the inhabitants in the Federal Capital Territory needs not worry.
The DG assures the residents especially inhabitants of Mpape and it’s neighboring settlements that there is no possible threat of earthquake.
Therefore, there is no cause for alarm.
He disclosed that the Agency had instructed a team to investigate the cause of the incident, adding that the Agency which would attain its 100th year of service to the nation was mandated to tackle any form of harzard related to the sector.
“A team of geologists and geophysicists dispatched on a fact finding mission and according to them said the vibration started around 2:30pm on the 5th of September, 2018 which lasted about a second but reoccured 3hours later around 5:30pm.
The vibration was again felt around 8pm which lasted for about 10 seconds.” He made this statement in a press conference over the weekend in Abuja.
He lauded the federal government for recently procuring six earthquake monitoring seismograms to enable proper monitoring of all ground disturbances, adding that the process of installations of the seismograms had begun in six geological zones of the country.
This earth tremor affected Mpape, Jabi, Gwarinpa and other parts of Maitama District of the Federal Capital Territory.
In a statement by the Ministry of Mines and Steel Development, Investigation by the Nigeria Geological Survey Agency team of experts to the affected sites for on the spot assessment indicate mild earth tremor.
