Mubi bombing: Senate tasks security agencies

Following last week’s twin bomb blasts in Mubi, Adamawa state, the Senate yesterday urged security agencies to ensure the safety of lives and property in the town and entire state.
It also called on the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA and the Presidential Committee on North East Initiative (PCNI) to, as a matter of urgency, provide relief materials to the aff ected community as directed by the vice president, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo. Similarly, it urged the National Orientation Agency (NOA), traditional councils and local governments to intensify enlightenment campaigns and synergy between the security agencies and traditional institution for adequate security in the Adamawa North senatorial district.
The Senate resolutions were sequel to a motion, “The twin bomb blast in Mubi and the need for immediate action to prevent recurrence,” sponsored by Senator Binta MasiGarba (APC, Adamawa North).
It directed its Committee on Security and National Intelligence to monitor the implementation of the resolutions. Masi-Garba informed that two suspected suicide bombers had on Tuesday, May 1 “shattered the relative peace in Mubi and environs through a twin bomb explosion at a mosque within the popular secondhand clothes market known as Kasuwan yan Gwwwonjo.”
“Over 29 persons were officially confirmed dead, but the grave diggers said they buried 85 people and 50 others were hospitalised and some in critical conditions, while property worth millions of naira also destroyed,” she said.
She commended the state government and the Mubi South and Mubi North local government councils for immediate evacuation of victims and providing medical services for injured victims to the Federal Medical Centre, Yola. She also lauded the vice-president for directing NEMA to provide relief materials to the victims and the visit of the Chief of Army Staff , Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai, to Mubi to assess the security situation in the town.
