This is a viral infection of the salivary glands, mostly affected of the salivary glands is the parotid the one between the corner of the jaw joint and the ear.
The viruses involved called adenovirus and echo virus the virus affects the gland without causing any symptoms for about two to three weeks.

can affect both adults and children and adult, there is a large swelling of gland at the corner of the angle of the jaw. Mumps is a transmittable disease meaning it can be spread from one person to the other. There is difficulty in opening the mouth, the other major salivary glands the sublingual, under the tongue and the sub-mandible, below the mandible are affected too. The virus infects other glands in the body, testes and ovaries. It is spread towards the lining of the brain, meningo- encephalitis.

When the glands are affected they may be unilateral and either bilaterally.
There may be a complication of deafness. Mumps can also be a picture of HIV, infected people especially in children.
Dry mouth , xerostomia causing bacteria sial-adenitis , inflammation of the salivary gland.
Mumps immunisation is carried out in childhood.
