Muslims urged to shun corruption

Muslims across the country has been charged to shun corruption. This call was made at the weekend when the Al-Habibiyah Islamic Society held its ninth annual women’s forum, with the theme: ‘The Role of Women in Eradicating Corruption’ held at the National Mosque, Abuja. Chairman of the occasion, Ambassador Ridhwan A. Mustapha, stressed this while commending the efforts of the society for rising up to get rid of corruption in the country. He said: “Corruption is every wrong doing. If you look at the way corruption starts in the Qur’an, corruption starts with Almighty Allah creating man for the first time.
When he created Adam, Allah told the angels that He was creating man, what did the angels say, they angels said, you want to create man on earth who will be spreading corruption? That was the first use of corruption. They thought they were advising God but God says I know what you don’t know. I want to make man my representative, I want to make man my ambassador and I know what to do with him.
“That is why it is important for everyone of us to know that every bad thing that we are doing to bring the country down is corruption. Whether we are stealing money, whether we are kidnapping, whether you are doing any evil thing, its corruption. Therefore, everyone of us must make sure that we fight this corruption and of course that is how Nigeria can be better.
“We want Nigeria to be greater that America, to be greater than South Africa but we cannot get there unless we tackle the corruption first,” he said. Wife of the President, Hajiya Aisha Muhammadu Buhari, also enjoin women to join the fight against corruption. She stressed that it is a shame that even after independence Nigeria is still rated among corrupt nations; adding that corruption is a bane of the society. The wife of the President, who was represented by Binta Mu’azu, therefore, urges the women to be watchful and collaborate to end corruption in Nigeria. “Women should put hands together to stop this menace called corruption.
Eradicate corruption by teaching our children right,” she said. Wife of Nasarawa state Governor, Hajiya Mairo AlMakura, condemn women for supporting corruption even at home. She, therefore, urges them to inculcate in their wards the value of being straight forward. She applauded the AlHabibiyah women for the initiative, saying that “this will go a long way in fighting corruption,” The lead speaker at the event, Hajiya Salamatu Sule, stressed that corruption goes beyond embezzlement by public officials.
It happens even in private sector. She described women as not victims but strong actors in corruption. However, they can be the whistle-blower wherever they are. “Wherever you are, you have a voice, set up ethical systems, reduce the effect of corruption “It is our primary duty to see to the eradication of corruption,” she said. She further calls for interreligious collaboration to fight the menace.
