Kaduna state Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Samuel Aruwan Monday stated that his versatility as a journalist aided his appointment, despite some people disagreeing with his expertise on security.
Aruwan, who was a former Kaduna correspondent of Blueprint Newspaper, took a leave of absence to become the Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to Governor Nasir el-Rufai of Kaduna state after serving the All Progressives Congress (APC) campaign team in Kaduna.
Aruwan, who was one of the commissioners sworn-in by Governor el-Rufai to serve the state in his second term a fortnight ago, said some people of interest kicked against his appointment because they believe he doesn’t have the requisite security expertise.
Addressing the executive members of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Kaduna state council when they paid him a courtesy visit in his office Monday, Aruwan said one does not need to be a security expert before attending to security issues.
“There was a lot of apprehension when I was appointed. Some people said I am not a security expert, and that I am a journalist, why should I be appointed? But as a journalist, l’m very versatile in every aspect of the society. I don’t need to be a security expert to man this ministry.
“We have security challenges in the state, but we will overcome it soon. We will continue to partner with the media to move this state forward. The media is my constituency, one day I will return to the field to report news again. I am grateful to you for coming.’
Chairman of NUJ Kaduna state council, Comrade Adamu Yusuf, while presenting a letter of congratulations to Aruwan, expressed happiness over his appointment, saying, “you are our own, and that is why executive members of the council have come to facilitate with you. We wish you success.”
