MYISD wants more women for elective positions

Michelle’s Youth Initiative for Sustainable Development (MYISD), non-governmental organisation (NGO) has decried the poor emergence of young women at all levels in elective positions in the country describing the situation as unimpressive and not good for the development of the country.

It’s Executive Director Comrade Michelle Onyeneke, told newsmen during an interview at a one-day National Legislative summit on the Domestication of the Violence Against Persons Prohibited (VAPP) Act, 2015 organised by the House Committee on Women Affairs and Social Development in Abuja.

Comrade Michelle called on President Muhammudu Buhari to appoint more women into various cabinet to close the gap.

According to her “I want to urge the federal and state governments to appoint women ministers, commissioners, heads of agencies with a view to closing the gap”

According to her, women in positions of authority resolve national crises without resorting to violence, advocate for social issues that benefit all, and allocate budgets to health and education.

She said that investing in women’s right to political participation was a necessary step towards achieving global gender equality and democratic governance.

“This investment creates a ripple effect that yields multiple benefits, not only for the individual woman, but also for families, communities, and countries.

She said studies show that increasing women’s participation in politics lead to greater investments in education and female board representation boast higher return on investment.

“Research has also suggested that gender balance in the political sphere promotes gender balance in the workforce, which could double global Gross Domestic Product,’’ she said.

She also urged Nigerian youths to follow the path of honour and engage themselves rather than wait for government to provide them with jobs .

She said her foundation recently awarded the Publisher of Corruption Reporters Mr Idris Usman as gender of the year recently just to encourage Nigerian youth to be self reliant and be innovative.

According to her, the award is also to inspire the young people thereby letting them know the much talked about leaders of tomorrow.

On her magazine which is yet to debut titled “Global Conciousness”, Michelle said it is aimed making Nigerians get to the right path.

“People are deviating and have forgotten humanity .The magazine is meant to reawaken the conciousness of the people,” she said.
