The National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC) has concluded plans to unveil a policy that will ensure the production and massive use of electric vehicles in the country.
The Director General of NADDC, Mr. Jelani Aliyu, who made this known to journalists recently in Abuja, said the move would go a long way in giving a major boost to the country’s automobile sector.
According to him, “We are strategising on electric vehicles policy that will support the production and usage of electric vehicles in Nigeria.
“The interesting thing about electric vehicles is that as exciting as they are and as magnificent as they are, overall their systems are simpler and more durable than the vehicles we all have now. This is big advantage for Nigeria to migrate to electric vehicles.”
While expressing the commitment of the Council to work towards bringing jobs back to Nigeria through the automobile sector, he said a portal which will capture all vehicles imported into the country will soon come on stream to address the issue of car smuggling.
“We are working on a portal that will ensure all the vehicles that are brought into the country are registered and all the information on these vehicles will be on that portal, so when you go to register your vehicle, when you go to insure it, when the police stop you, and the vehicle identification is not on that portal, we will know it was smuggled in,” Jelani said.
The DG commended Innoson Vehicles Manufacturing (IVM) company for its various efforts to sustain the production of vehicles in the country.
“Innoson is the only indigenous automobile manufacturer in Nigeria, what it is doing is tremendous. NADDC is 100 per cent behind Innoson and we will continue to support Innoson to make it grow bigger and better,” he added
