NAFDAC commences regulation of chemical marketers in Yobe

As part of effort to safeguard the general public from consuming harmful chemicals especially those used in preservation of beans, grains and other farm products, the National Agency For Food Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) in Yobe has commenced the regulation of all chemical marketers  in the state.

The Coordinator of the agency in the state, Lawan Musa, who disclosed this
on Monday while answering questions from Blueprint correspondent, said: “We are taking step to safeguard the public, because we discovered that harmful chemicals are being used to preserve farm products which are expected to last for months, but sometimes when the owner runs out of money in weeks, he takes them out to market and that will be harmful to health when consumed.

“They must have a minimum knowledge of the chemicals they are selling
preferably to get registered with Corporate Affairs Commission and must have chemical marketing listing certificate to avoid selling the chemicals to wrong hands.”

Musa said NAFDAC held a consultative meeting with the chemical Marketers and those into the business of preserving the farm products, stating that there were many ways of preserving the farms’ products in the market, not necessarily with chemicals.

“Our staffs are going round the major cities to inspect stores and
make sure they comply with the directives and those who refuse to do
so, the products will be confiscated while the law will take its
course,” he said.
