In its effort to rid Nigeria of fake, adulterated and unwholesome products, National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has seized goods worth over N3 million at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu.
Briefing newsmen yesterday, the Deputy Director in-charge of Airport, John Okwori, warned fakers who may think that Enugu Airport was a safe haven for bringing in unwholesome products into the country to have a re-think as NAFDAC “has setup office at port to checkmate their activities.”

Okwori regretted that despite NAFDAC warnings, people had remained recalcitrant in faking and adulteration of products.
He stressed that the latest “thing fakers have implored is by bringing empty packaging materials with foreign addresses such that when they bring them down here, if we don’t catch them, they go and fill it up, coke and sale to Nigerians as something that is made in abroad.”
The consignment seized included “three unaccompanied large sacks of empty plastic containers of labeled Glamor Body Wash visible fairness natural whitening effects (500ml) formulated in U.S.A, Glamor visible fairness natural skin whitening in just seven days body lotion (400ml) formulated in U.S.A, Glamor Active facial cleanser whitening facial toner (200ml) also formulated in U.S.A (AWB No. ET361884, ET361965 & ET361941).”

Others were “one carton containing tea and labeled empty perfume containers (AWB No. ET203140) and one carton containing 154 pcs (20kg pack size) sample bags with picture of a Chief on Dunukofia Jubilates long grain parboiled rice (AWB No. ET203140).”
Okwori also said while the clearing agent and owners of sample bags imported on September 1, showed up for collection on September 5, 2014, they failed to comply to the compliance directive issued.
“In fact we insisted that amongst other document a copy of certificate of registration of the product be presented, yet declined.”
