National Association of Nigeria Students (NANS) has hailed the recent passage of the bill for the enactment of an Act to establish the Nigeria Peace Corps by the Senate, saying it was a right step in the fight against youth unemployment.
This is even as it called on President Muhammadu Buhari to quickly assent to the bill and give it all the needed institutional support on behalf of the students.
Addressing a press conference at the weekend, the national president, Comrade Aruna Kadiri, said the fact that member of the peace corps will be deployed to all tertiary institution, secondary and primary schools to maintain law and order, curb cultism, drug abuse and other social vices has earned NASS the students respect.
He said: “Passing the bill, we must confess is a giant stride and a right step in the right direction. This is a major leap for all Nigerian youths as such, we appreciate the leadership of the national assembly and it members.
“If assented to by the president, the unemployment situation bedeviling Nigerian youth and its attendant social implications will be reduced drastically as this bill will go a long way to adequately empower, develop and provide alternative employment for many youth.
“This will increase the culture of peace, volunteerism, nationalism, patriotism, community service and national building among Nigeria youth. Because some of the visions and missions of Peace Corps is to train and equip the youth with knowledge on peace education, conflict mediation, intervention, reconciliation and confident building.”
