NANS protest xenophobic killings, close down DSTV, MTN

The National Association of Nigeria Students (NANS) Thursday staged a protest over the continuous murder of Nigerian citizens in South Africa.

The students also closed down Summit Communication, the main agent of DSTV and MTN offices in Makurdi, the Benue state capital.

The association, led by its Deputy Zonal Coordinator, Aba Owoicho Aba said they were out to condemn the incessant xenophobic killings targeted at Nigeria nationals in South Africa.

Owoicho, who also spoke with newsmen during the protest said they had been mandated to close down all South African businesses in Nigeria, including MTN, DSTV and Shoprite.

He stated that if Nigerian businesses cannot enjoy peace and support to strive as South African businesses enjoy from Nigerian government, then it is only reasonable that all South African businesses should be closed down.

He said it was painful to see that Nigeria that supported South Africa, to gain freedom is being treated this way.

“It is very painful to see that citizens of a country that supported South Africa to attain independence are been massacred. Nigeria fought hard to stop apartheid and now, they are paying us back with evil.

“We will not allow any South Africa business to strive until a concrete arrangement is put in place to guarantee the safety of Nigerians in South Africa.

“We want to draw the attention of the international community to this dastardly act,” Owoicho said.

Reacting to the incident, MTN Manager Vera Obe, told the students that the organisation was deeply worried over the killings of Nigerians in South Africa, assuring that serious measures were being put in place to ensure that the xenophobic attacks came to an end.
