NAPTIP seeks NCC support on human trafficking

National Agency for Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has sought support of the Nigerian Communication Commission (NCC) in tracking suspected human traffickers through call logs.

Director-General of the agency, Julie Okah-Donli, who appealed to the commission in Abuja, said United Nations charter had equated human trafficking next to drugs.
She said: “Our main challenge is funding. United Nations believes that human trafficking is next to drug and Nigeria does not have the funds to tackle it.

She decried the attitude of people to report cases of human trafficking, saying: “We really don’t have people reporting these cases to us, but most of the calls NAPTIP receives are based on intelligence.

“We are thinking that NAPTIP and NCC can galvanise support, collaborate in sensitisation of the public. We can do this through bulk SMS and NCC can help us bridge the communication gap.

In his response, Executive Vice Chairman of NCC Prof. Umar Dambata, said human trafficking had created multitudes problems for the country and stressed that everything must be done to tackle the menace.

He assures NAPTIP of NCC’s readiness to include it in the emergency lines. “We have a toll free line 622 for consumers to lay complaints, this can take care of what you are looking for”, he said.
