NARD offers NUJ members free eye screening

The National Association of Resident Doctors of Nigeria has offered free eye screening to members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Kaduna State council to ascertain the health status of their eyes.
The exercise which commenced at the NUJ secretariat, Kaduna yesterday witnessed large a turnout of members.
Public Relations Officer of the group, Dr. Ugochukwu Eze confirmed to our reporter that a few members were suspected to have glaucoma and were referred to the National Eye Centre for further examination.
According to him, others had presbyopia and were given prescription for reading glasses while the rest who were identified with one form of refractive errors or the other had also been advised to take necessary precautions.
While speaking to our reporter, he confirmed that about 45 members were captured in the exercise that lasted for three hours.
Earlier, while addressing NUJ members, the President, Association of Resident Doctors, Kaduna, Dr.
Ibrahim Zakari said black people were more prone to glaucoma.
Glaucoma is common among the black people and the more we age, themore we are at risk of the disease.
“There is no early symptoms of glaucoma and before someone starts feeling it, it must have reached 70 per cent and it can make someone to lose his or her sight and once that happens, that eye can never be regained,” the said Dr.
Zakari had recommended regular eye screening for people.
In his remarks, chairman of Kaduna council of the NUJ, Comrade Adamu Yusuf, called on members to imbibe the habit of regular eye screening to avoid cases of glaucoma.
