Nasarawa joint tertiary staff union suspends strike

The Joint Union of Nasarawa State Tertiary Institutions (JUNSTI) has suspended its two-month-old strike. .

JUNSTI ia an umbrella union formed by academic and non-academic staff unions of the three Nasarawa state-owned tertiary institutions. Members of the union from Nasarawa State Polytechnic, Lafia, College of Agriculture, Lafia, and College of Education, Akwanga, downed tools on February 12, over nonpayment of promotion arrears and other entitlements.

Chairman of JUNSTI, Mr Paul Useni, told newsmen Thursday in Lafia that the decision to suspend the strike was reached at the emergency congress of the joint union.

He said the joint unions had met with the state government and reached some level of agreement in the interest of the state. He therefore, directed members of JUNSTI to return to their duty posts forthwith.

Some of the demands of the unions were payment of four-year promotion arrears, payment of pension to retired staff since 2015 and the implementation of 65-year retirement age for non-academic staff.
