Nasarawa ministry of health rolls out programs for 2020


The Nasarawa state Ministry of health Thursday rolled out programs for year 2020, towards achieving well-being of the people of the state.

State commissioner for health, Ahmed Baba Yahaya, stated the plans at a press briefing to mark the World Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) celebration in Lafia.

He said with the support from the ministry and the carter center, the state programme intends to mobilise and train 45 local integrated health team members to address the neglected tropical diseases, 225 health facility staff, 611 community directed distributors, 42 school supervisors, 13 social mobilisation officers and 2,824 school teachers.

Yahaya said the state  also intends to treat 720,000 school age children for schistosomiasis and soil transmitted helminthes.

” Neglected Tropical Diseases are a set of infectious disease that cause a lot of morbidity and disability in our people and they are affected with these diseases as a result of poor or lack of environment sanitation, poor housing ,lack of safe portable drinking water and personal hygiene.

“The ministry had provided man- power for the programme while the carter center supported the state in capacity building at state, LGAs and community levels leaving no stone unturned in the fight against these deadly disease.

The commissioner  also enumerated the achievements of the Ministry in 2019 with the support of carter center trained 45 local integrated health team members, 225 health facility staff, 611community directed distributors, 2,153 teachers, 42 school supervisors and 7social mobilization officers.

Yahaya said government is mindful of its neighbour who are still struggling with these diseases and the risk of re-infecting the state through border LGAs as medicine would be sent to Primary Health Cares at those border communities for treatment of such persons.
