The Nasarawa state government Thursday warned both the public and private schools in the state to desist from excessive charges of West African Senior School Certificate Examination Council (WAEC) fees.
Permanent secretary ministry of education Aliyu Abdullahi Agwai, gave the warning, when leadership of the National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools (NAPPS) visited him in his office in Lafia.
He said the outrageous increase in WAEC and NECO by school proprietors and principals of public schools could deny children from less privileged homes from writing exams and would equally posed danger to education sector in the state.
“We will not tolerate any over charges in WAEC or NECO, we have instructed our chief inspectors of education of various area offices to checkmate, co- ordinate this and reported back to us, anybody found wanting shall be dealt with.”
Agwai said federal government has spelled out on how WAEC and NECO should be paid, and state government has issued circular in that regard.
He, however, urged them to assist the ministry with the comprehensive data of their professional and non professional teachers, number of staffing and students on quarterly basis for the interest of education sector in the state.
“These are data that is require for a school to be known.”
