NASS plans publicity mgt panel-Reps spokesman

Spokesman of the House of Representatives, Hon Benjamin Kalu, Wednesday disclosed that plans have been concluded to put in place, a National Assembly publicity management committee.

Kalu said the plan was in apparent response to the widely believed wrong public perception of the apex legislature.
The lawmaker at the inaugural meeting of the committee on Media and Public Affairs, explained that the seemingly negative public perception of the house’s activities would be addressed by    ensuring accurate and factual reportage, noting that the committee would in the next four years, synergize with the media through periodic media publications.

“It is my pleasure to announce that following my courtesy visit to the Clerk to the National Assembly, Alhaji Mohammed Sani-Omolori to address the aforementioned issues, the chairmen of the Media and Public Affairs Committees of the Senate and House of Representatives, the Senior Media Aides to the Presiding officers as well as the Media handlers of the National Assembly Management, have agreed to constitute a National Assembly Publicity Management Committee which will start meeting from next week Tuesday, October 22, 2019”, he stated.

He said he expects the synergy of this triumvirate would go a long way to address the issues of information management and funding for our activities.

Kalu assured that the committee would ensure that the narratives were changed in the public perception of the National Assembly.

“We will work closely with other sister committees in the House, including the Committee on Information, National Orientation, Ethics and Values; and the Committee on Freedom of Information in pushing for laws that will position media practice in Nigeria, in line with global best practices to discourage the dissemination of  propaganda and biased reporting of legislative affairs”.
