NASS trains youths, women on poultry farming

 

The House of Representatives Committee on Agricultural Colleges and Research Institutes, in collaboration with the National Animal Production Research Institutes (NAPRI) Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria and Tumasa Nigeria Limited has trained young farmers on capacity building in poultry production.

Our correspondent reports that the participants were drawn from the North-west and North-east geopolitical zones of the country.

Declaring close the five-day training for the farmers held in Zaria recently, the executive director, National Animal Production Research Institutes, Professor Abdullahi Kolo Muhammad, charged the participants to apply the basic techniques of poultry production they were thought in their farming activities to achieve the target objectives.

The director, represented by his deputy, Dr. Sadiq Musa Otaru, said his institute would continue to ensure sustainable interest in agricultural production in the country by improving animal production research.

“This training is to educate you as young farmers on how best you can start and manage pen production from initial stage. I want to use this opportunity to request to step down what you learnt to others as you return to various states,” he told the participants.

Professor Muhammad appreciated the house committee chairman, Mannir Babban Dan-Agundi and Managing Director of the other collaborating firm, Alhaji Muhammad Jamilu, for their initiatives and urged them to maintain the tempo as it would go a long way in boosting livestock production in the country.

Also speaking, the managing director of collaborating firm, Alhaji Muhammad Jamilu, said  considering the high rate of people engaging in the business, his firm deemed it necessary  to collaborate with the institutes in training the youth on the modern techniques of poultry production to enable them  become self reliant and contribute to the nation’s economic development.

In their paper presentations, facilitators of the training, Dr. Kayode Olatumogun and Dr. Idris Abdullahi of NAPPRI   said that feed constitutes over seventy per cent of the cost of production of poultry meat and eggs and was the most implicated of all problems in poultry production enterprise as such poultry farmers should ensure proper and adequate process in formulating poultry farm for better production.

They noted that provision of clean environment for breeding of chicks and rearing bring about good result in poultry production to poultry farmers.

They encouraged the young farmers to continuously engage on the production as it was easier, profitable and self sufficient.

Participants interviewed expressed delight with the kind gesture which according them will no doubt make them productive in livestock production.

They promised to reciprocate the gesture using what they learnt judiciously for the betterment of the society and the nation in general.
