National Open University matriculates 14 inmates in ogun 

The National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) has matriculated fourteen inmates of the Nigeria Correctional Center, Ibara Abeokuta, the Ogun state capital, into different degree programs.

Speaking at the matriculation ceremony, the representative of the Vice Chancellor, Dr. Olusegun Obaadesegun, congratulated the new intakes as the navigates the largest community of open and distance learning in higher education in West Africa.

He therefore admonished the inmates to be good ambassadors of the correction center, saying that the decision to further their education inspite of their present limitations will spur others for success.

“On behalf of the governing council, Senate and management of the National open university of Nigeria, I welcome you to this 23rd matriculation ceremony of our institution.

“I congratulate you for success in navigating our modern online admission and the registration processes which has had over 16,000 new learners to our university today.

“This comprises 11,851 undergraduate and 4,808 postgraduate student in various faculties.

“By so doing, you at the correctional center here were privilege to join the overall 50,000 returning student of the university. I am indeed glad to tell you that this is the largest community of open and distance learning in higher education in west Africa.

“In essence you would be able to learn at your pace and at anytime thereby putting your faith in your hands and to dedicate yourselves.

“If challenges arises, we have assembled dedicated teams of councilor, professional facilitators across all our study centers around the country to attend to your concerns.

“As our ambassador I expect you to be well behaved at all times to your family friends and everyone even at the correctional center,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Office In Charge of Ibara Custodian Centered, Bamidele Oshin, appreciates the National Open University for the effort put in place on the collaboration between the University and the correction center.

He therefore urge the inmates to take up the challenge, while showing a good example of the center.

“I want you to take up this challenge Irrespective of the category you find yourself in as it is not over until it is over.

“You have to show a very good example to all, to yourself and within the yard. I want you to maximize this opportunity given to you, you need to do the needful as at when due so that when some of you will be leaving this place, you would go out with your heads high above and telling the rest of the world that after coming out of the prison you became a different percent. So make good use of this opportunity and don’t give up,” he added.
