National tennis tourney: Organisers dangle N10m on overall winner

 

A whooping N10 million has been earmarked to be won by would-be winner at the end of a maiden National tennis championship slated for Abuja and Lagos later this year.

President, Nigeria Tennis Federation (NTF), Dayo Akindoju who disclosed this while addressing sporting media inside package B premises of Abuja National stadium maintained that the tournament which is meant for only Nigerians and bankrolled by Tennis Management Company Limited (TMCL)was to encourage upcoming Tennis athletes for greater future exploits.

According to the NTF Supremo; “The aim is to have a big tournament which is known as Abuja open is to encourage our youth and tennis lovers from grassroots to look up to something in future, one here in Abuja in June and second one in Lagos by October

“This is supposed to be the biggest money in the tournament. It used to be N750, 000 in the past but we decided to raise the bar to make sure the tennis is attractive even to the junior ones so that we know that they have something to play for in tennis.

“For now we are starting with Abuja and Lagos, but next year we are going to extend it to 3 cities its going to be male and female singles and doubles categories.

TMCL chairman, Anire Kanyi said the initiative was to raise the bar of tennis in Nigeria adding; “we believe Nigeria abound with talents and we want to take it to the next level.”

Athletes whose ages are not less than 14 years are permitted to take part during the competition.
