National Association for Women Enterpreneurs (NAWE) has proposed a policy of power sharing/rotation of key elected political positions between men and women in the country from presidency to counsellorship.
It’s National President, Ngozi Ozongwu, in a presentation at the just concluded All Progressives Congress (APC) committee on True federalism meeting in Abuja, noting that this is in tandem with “the principles of freedom, equality and justice, for the purpose of consolidating the unity of our people”, as enshrined in the 1999 Constitution (as amended).
According to her, it is also in consonance with the National Gender Policy (2006) that seeks to: “… build a just society devoid of discrimination, harness the full potentials of all social groups regardless of sex or circumstances, promote the enjoyment of fundamental human rights.”
“It will also protect the health, social, economic and political well-being of all citizens in order to achieve equitable rapid economic growth, social, financial and technological resources are efficiently and effectively deployed for sustainable development.”
According to her, the power sharing and rotation between the North and South is no longer tenable as it has not improved governance since 29th May, 1999, the current democratic process begun, hence the clamour and agitation for restructuring.
“Nigerian women have played major roles in building our great nation. It is time to rotate elective offices between men and women, including the office of president.
Ngozi further said it has become necessary to address the issue of True Federalism or Restructuring with a view to consolidating and strengthening Nigeria’s frail democracy.
She however noted that the clamour for true federalism, restructuring, devolution of powers, resource control and regionalism has gained momentum in the recent time due to perceived injustices, marginalization, inequity and inequality in governance of the Federal Republic of Nigeria”.
“Women are always at the receiving end of this social injustice,” she said.
