NCCE calls for engagement of only certified teachers

The National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE) Tuesday appealed to the federal government and other stakeholders to ensure that only certified teachers are engaged in the teaching profession.

Deputy director, Curriculum Development and Innovations, NCCE, Dr Mchivga Abelega, made the call at the five-day workshop on the review of the 2012 edition of the NCE minimum standards for Arts and Social Science in Gombe.

He said the commission had been working towards ensuring that colleges of education curriculum in the country are up to date and that high quality teachers were produced.

He said one of the major challenges is the problem of lack of employment in the teaching profession.

“We have good teachers with the needed skills to teach, but they roam the street searching for what to do,” he said.

The executive secretary of the commission, Professor Bappa Muhammadu, said the review after every five years was to accommodate emerging issues and changing trends in the education sector.

Muhammadu who was represented by director, administration programme department, Mr Vitalis Uji, said that the 2012 version of the minimum standards was due for review.

“That is why we are here to take a second look at it with the view to injecting new trends so that we make it more effective for training of effective teachers for our basic education system,” he said.

Provost, Federal College of Education (techinical) (FCET) Gombe, said NCCE had over the years been giving very responsive and dynamic leadership in ensuring standard in tertiary teacher education sector in the country.
