NCWD trains female farmers, project managers on ICT

The National Centre for Women Development (NCWD) said it has engaged a total of 76 females selected from various farmers association and small scale businesses across the country on Information and Communication Technology (ICT).

Its Director General (DG) Mrs. Mary Ekpere-Eta disclosed this yesterday in Abuja during the opening ceremony of the combined 5-day ICT training for female farmers and project management training for female entrepreneurs.

Ekpere-Eta noted the importance of ICT to businesses today, stressing that training can help female farmers and enterpreneurs become more productive to reap from benefits and opportunities that the entrepreneurial value chain provides.

She regretted that Nigeria has been over dependent on the oil sector as a major source of income for powering the economy, saying that this sector alone cannot address the increasing demands of citizens in the country.

She therefore urged the participants to take advantage of the training, stressing that project management training is indispensable as it allows entrepreneurs to manage the entire life cycle of their projects in an organised format.

She added that ICT can also impact agricultural practices by providing farmers access to communication facilities, provide an interactive demand base for agricultural services and undertake automation of key agricultural functions.

“As a country, Nigeria has been over dependent on the oil sector as a major source of income for powering the wheels of our economy, but this sector alone cannot address the ever increasing demands of our nation.

“Experts have learnt their voices to the idea of diversifying our economy from its mono-economic state, and agriculture and entrepreneurship have been found to be sustainable alternatives,” she said.

“Despite some of the investment to bridge in the ICT sector aimed at the digital divide, many Nigerians, especially the female entrepreneurs lack information about the best practices in the application of ICT to business. This training is therefore designed to address the problem,” she assured

The DG further stressed that ICT, Vocational and entrepreneurial skill development are imperative in enhancing the economic status of women.

Earlier in his goodwill message, the Head of IT Mr. Morrison Udobong, stressed the importance of ICT to businesses today as a transforming tool to way of life and the world at large.

Meanwhile the North Central Coordinator Women in Renewable Energy Association Segilola Oluwole,  urged the participants to embrace the training opportunity to grow business, saying ICT is the future and the future is women
