NDLEA destroys 6,963.755kg of drugs in Taraba

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) Thursday destroyed 6,963.755 kilograms of drugs in Taraba state.

National chairman of the agency, Col. Muhammad Mustapha Abdallah while speaking in Jarouno village said the drugs were made up of 4,413.566 kilograms of cannabis sativa, 2550.189 kilograms of psychotropic substance, largely tramadol, cough syrup with codeine, rohypnol and diazepam.

He stated  that situation of the drugs in Taraba state and other states within the North-east was worrisome, adding that this was validated by the Nigerian drug use survey carried out by the United Nations office on drugs and crime.

He said Taraba state was made more vulnerable due to its geographical location, bordering the Republic of Cameroon coupled with the activities of the hostile elements within the region fueled by funds from trafficking and drug use by their foot soldiers.

“Taraba state is also a state with growing population regarded as the most vulnerable target group for the pervasive drug problem.

“It is our collective aspiration to build a better society where individuals can pursue their goals without any fear of molestation or intimidation.

“Our efforts must bear in mind the fact that there can be no sustainable development without peace and no peace without sustainable development,” he said.

He maintained that the agency have embarked on a program of action aimed at developing a critical mass movement against the drug menace with an all inclusive and shared responsibility approach.
