NEDC begins peace, inter-religious dialogue in Bauchi

The North East Development Commission (NEDC) Friday in Bauchi flagged off a programme on promotion of peace, inter-religious dialogue and de-radicalisation for peaceful co-existence among the people residing in the North-east.

NEDC’s managing director, Mohammed Goni Alkali, who launched the programme, said the initiative was to increase the knowledge of citizens in respecting one another for peace and peaceful coexistence.

“The main purpose of engaging media in this peace programme is to reach out and sensitise the public particularly youths on the dangers of extremism and radicalisation as well as influences associated with the terms, prevent the most at risk individuals from being radicalised and appeal to their conscience. In the same vein, the programmes will lay emphasis on moderation and peaceful co-existence in society.

“The Commission is handing over drugs and medical consumables to support the state government in responding to the cholera outbreak in the state. There is also a need to focus more on long term prevention measures such as ensuring clean water and hygiene measures for communities to prevent widespread future outbreaks,” he said.

On his part, Governor Bala Mohammed, represented by his Chief of Staff, Government House, Bauchi, Aminu Gamawa, applauded the Commission for “coming up with the peace and inter-religious dialogue initiative.”

He gave the assurance that the state government would support the programme to enable it to succeed in the state.
