Need to re-debate sex education for school curricula

Long before now there was an attempt to introduce sex education as a subject in the nation’s primary and secondary schools to help educate the teenagers about sex in order to prevent them from engaging in unhealthy sexual practices that could lead to unwanted pregnancies, abortions, sexual diseases, and even death. But parents collectively kicked against the idea, using religion to justify their decision.

The rejection of sex education by parents has caused more harm than good as many teenagers go into it hastily, blindly and cause preventable problems that destroy lives and the society in general.

Unfortunately, victims of unwanted pregnancies, abortions, sexual transmitted diseases, etc are daughters of the same parents who stood tough and murdered the idea of launching sex education in schools.

It is unfortunate to know that many girls who see their menstruation for the first time could not understand what it is and feel terrified because their parents, especially mothers, who are in a better position to educate them on this ahead of time to enable them prepare for it, refuse to do so because they have considered it as part of sex education and a taboo.

Sex education may not stop the teenage ones from engaging into unhealthy sex but it will help reduce unwanted pregnancies, abortions, STDs, damaging of uterus, vulvodynia (discomfort or pain of the vulva), vesico vaginal fistula and even death.

Therefore, parents should have a rethink and collectively advocate for the introduction of sex education in the same way they kicked against it because its introduction in our primary and secondary schools, will do more good than harm.
