Plans are underway to ensure that Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage and locally made goods are showcased at the forthcoming 2014 Commonwealth Games scheduled to hold in Glasgow, Scotland.
The executive director of Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC), Mr. Olusegun Awolowo disclosed this yesterday while receiving the president of Nigerian Olympic Committee (NOC), Engr. Sani Ndanusa, in his office in Abuja
Awolowo stressed that the sporting event offers a veritable platform for Nigerian manufacturers and entrepreneurs to showcase the export potentials of Nigeria to the European Union and Commonwealth member countries.
He assured the President that the Council would collaborate with his Committee to promote Nigerian goods by establishing Product Display Centre at the Nigerian House situated within the games village.
Responding, Mr Ndanusa said Nigeria was not only participating in the Games to win laurels but also to attract foreign investors who may want to seize the opportunity to meet Nigerian businessmen and women at the Nigerian House, as well as visit the Nigerian pavilion to have a feel of made-in-Nigeria goods.
In his words “Nigeria’s participation at the event would help correct the impression that the country was not safe due to the negative way the Western media portray the security situation in the country, adding that Nigeria was hopeful of hosting the Junior Olympics Games soon”.
“Apart from sports, we also need to tell our stories and showcase the abundant potentials in the Nigerian tourism and trade sector. So we felt the need to establish a Nigerian House during the 11- day sporting event scheduled to hold from July 23 – August 3, 2014”, Ndanusa added.
