The Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has commissioned its forum office in Birnin kebbi, the Kebbi state capital, to mediate between the Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) and customers in the state.
Speaking at the occasion, the state Deputy Governor, Alhaji Samaila Yombe Dabai said the creation of the forum office was a welcome development as the idea would go a long way in ensuring that the customers are given value for their money.
He noted that Governor Atiku Abubakar Bagudu has made it possible for the state to enjoy 24-hour uninterrupted electricity supply, adding that efforts were being made to ensure that other parts of the state are also carried along in the gesture.
Speaking earlier, the NERC Commissioner, Consumer Affairs Division, Dr. Moses Arigu, said the establishment of the forum office was to play a supervisory role between the consumers and Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company in order to ensure good energy service.
He explained that the office would serve as a complaint outfit where any customer could walk in and lay grievances or poor services rendered so as to receive the attention of the electricity body.
Arigu, however, disclosed that similar offices would be commissioned in Sokoto and Zamfara for effective coverage of the zone.
In his remarks, the Managing Director of Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company, Engr Garba Haruna, disclosed that the company was running the business at a loss as many consumers in the zone were not willing to pay for consumption.
According to him, the zone has over 500,000 consumers but less than 200,000 were registered as customers who redeemed their tariff at the end of the month, citing example of the state capital Birnin kebbi, where he said has over 200,000 potential consumers but has less than 8,000 customers.
