New couple jailed for environmental offences in Ondo

A mobile court sitting in Ondo city in Ondo state, yesterday, sentenced a newly wedded couple, Mr. Oyewobi Julius, and his wife, Toyin, with 35 others to three months imprisonment each on a three count charge, for various environmental offences.
Similarly, nine other persons were asked to embark on a one month communal labour within the premises of the Ondo west local government secretariat or pay a fine of N10, 000 each. The accused persons were mainly hawkers.
According to the prosecutor, Mrs. Adejoke Olanrewaju, said the accused persons were found roaming the streets of the area during the last Saturday environmental exercise, an offence which, she said, contravened Section 17(h) of Ondo state environmental sanitation law 2004 and punishable under same section.
They were also of obstructing the enforcement officers from performing their official duties at various locations in the local government and thereby committed an offence contrary to section 20 of the Ondo state environmental sanitation law.
When the charge sheet was read to the accused, they all pleaded guilty to the offences, while the presiding Magistrate, Mrs. Odenusi Fadeyi, sentenced them to three years imprisonment with hard labour or a fine of N5, 000 each on each of the count charges.
