A social group based in Abakaliki, the Progressives for Greatness, has called on Nigerians to sustain the promotion of love, peace and unity as they enter into the new year.
The group’s President, Mr Okechukwu Mgbada, made the call in Abakaliki during its occasion to end 2019 and usher 2020 while advising that the country will gain a lot when love and unity reign.
The president who is a Member of the Ebonyi Secondary Education Board (SEB) said that the country witnessed lots of positive strides in 2019 due to the imbibing of love, peace and unity being preached by relevant stakeholders.
“Contrary to predictions of pessimists, the country remained united and indivisible after its general elections in 2019 and witnessed a drastic drop in civil disturbances.
He noted that such display of love resulted in the drastic reduction of herdsmen/ farmers clashes, communal crises, displacement of persons due to violence.
“A lot however need to be done in 2020 to ensure that incidences of kidnapping which was on the rise, are curtailed to consolidate on the gains of governance experienced in 2019,” he said.
Mgbada hailed President Muhammdu Buhari for ensuring the unity of the country while enhancing infrastructure in the social sector.
“Workers in Nigeria were paid the new minimum wage with accumulating arrears and we also witnessed general improvement in infrastructure in road, rail and air.
He also commended Chief David Umahi, Governor of Ebonyi state for his rapid development of the state, noting that it has massively developed the state.
“Most of our members who reside outside the state and country are awed by the level of infrastrutural transformation especially in Abakaliki with most of them not recognizing the city again.
The group’s president said that the group has intellectuals, political office holders, business entrepreneurs as members and promote peace, progress, unity and harmony among the citizens.
“We thank God for the promotions and other blessings in 2019 and are optimistic of more promotions in 2020 while contributing our quota to the development of the state and country.
A Chinese-based member of the group, Mr Jumbo Onyekachi, commended its leadership for effectively coordinating the group’s activities especially in assisting the vulnerable members of the society.
He expressed thrills at the level of infrastructural strides in Ebonyi state on return to the country and urged the citizens to continue supporting the government.
