Newspapers distributors, vendors hail Al-Makura over urban planning

Newspapers distributors and vendors in Nasarawa state have applauded Governor Umaru Tanko Al-Makura for his urban renewal projects and appealed to him to consider them by mapping out strategic portions in the capital. They made the appeal at the weekend in separate views, saying that newspaper business was part of information dissemination and a platform for education of the populace on global happenings. A major distributor, Suleiman Danbaba, said the appeal was necessary following the directive given by the governor that all those doing businesses at the famous On The Move Park should vacate as the Park was the central distributing area of newspapers in the state capital.

He said the relocation would seriously affect the newspaper business in the state capital, pointing out that “drivers that bring the papers from Abuja and other parts of the country to Nasarawa cannot trace us easily.” “I inherited this business from my late father who was first to do this business when Lafia was part of Plateau state, and this dates back to the late sixties. When he died, I had to continue from where he stopped,” he said. He, therefore, appealed to the governor to include Vendors’ Stand in his physical planning design, noting that it would go a long way in shielding them from sun and rainfall effects. Also, another vendor, Mr. Mark Ayaka, said: “We are all appealing to the governor as he creates conducive environment for traders in markets across the state to do same for us, newspapers vendors. This will improve not only on development, but serve as revenue source for the state,” he said.
