NGO partners UN on women empowerment in North-east

A Non-Governmental Organization, Search for Common Ground dedicated to conflict transformation and peace building in the world is partnering United Nations Women with funding from the Government of Japan to implement the “strengthening the resilience of conflict affected women and their leadership in humanitarian action, peace processes and socio-economic recovery in north-east Nigeria.”

The State Project Coordinator, David Okorafor, disclosed this in a leadership training facilitated by two experts Tamwakat Golit, a Gender specialist and Mubarak Yusuf, an Expert in Peace Development and the Common Ground Approach in Damaturu.

The beneficiaries of the project who are women from rural communities and IDP camps have been earlier trained on Improved Rice Parboiling Techniques (IPT) and other Income Generating Activities (IGAs) aimed at transforming the way women deal with conflict from an adversarial approach towards collaborative problem solving methods.

Okorafor added that the major objective of the training was to train women on key soft skills to support their long term resilience to the ongoing insurgency and conflict.

“This training completes the circle of leadership training which started in December of 2019 in Mafa and Jere LGAs of Borno State. We have been working with women in Borno and Yobe to support women’s livelihood and financial independence and also training them on key leadership skills that support confidence building, non-adversarial communication techniques, community mobilization, and relationship building. These skills are key in promoting peace and their individual communities” he said.

Blueprint gathered the group would also conduct a two-day coaching and monitoring visits to the women cooperative members to provide the cooperatives with oversight and support their ability to sustain and apply their learned skills in their income generating activities and to monitor their use of the equipment that were earlier distributed to them.
