A non-governmental organisation (NGO), Advocacy Nigeria, in conjunction with SURE-P MCH, has embarked on massive awareness campaign to over 100 communities in Zamfara state on the dangers of rampant cases of deaths amongst women and children.
Executive Secretary of the NGO, Rabiu Ahmed Sambo, said the awareness campaign was aimed at providing a platform for effective quality health care system in the state.
Sambo said communities ought to be properly educated on health issues, especially pregnant mothers.
The national co-coordinator of the NGO, Hajiya Balkisu Yusuf, urged traditional rulers to develop interest and fashion in supporting women and child health issues.
She said women and children suffered serious neglect in accessing the health facilities in their communities.
Also speaking, the Head of Gynaecology Department, Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Gusau, Dr. Danladi Abubakar, said based on the current statistics released by WHO, “Nigeria has occupied up to ten percent of mortality death while nineteen states of the North has up to seventy percent of these statistics.”
He said the delay in taking pregnant women to hospitals was a problem associated with rampant cases of health challenges contributing to high mortality rate in the country.
