NHRC to FG: Proff er legal, political solutions to Shi’ites’ problem

National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has called on the federal government to “come up with appropriate political and legal approaches to resolve the lingering case of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN), and its leader, Sheikh Ibraheem El-Zakzaky. The Commission made the call yesterday in a statement issued by the Commission’s Acting Executive Secretary, Mrs. Oti Ovrawah, and the Head, Media Relations Unit, Fatimah Agwai Mohammad. The statement read in part: “It is imperative for the Nigerian Police Force to exercise restraint in the handling of protests by the Shi’ites protesters in order to prevent violation of rights and dignity of the citizens.
“Members of IMN should be peaceful and desist from using children and vulnerable persons while on protest.” Ovrawah, therefore, called on all citizens to cultivate peaceful relations and assist government in maintaining law and order.
