NHRC harps on women participation in election

The Executive-Secretary of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Tony Ojukwu Esq, has asked the federal government to take action and enact bills that will encourage women participation in elections.

Ojukwu made this statement at the media briefing on women participation in elections support Bill 2018 in Abuja.

He said: “We cannot leave the women out of it and that is why provisions have been made in the Bill for a legitimate way in which women will not have to go through intimidating process to achieve their rights. At least where 1/3rd of Representatives in the Parliament are women, the idea would be to build this numbers of women and support them and in no time they will get empowered to be independent to stand side by side with the men,” he stressed.

“No doubt countries that provide the needed setting for women’s participation in politics and encourage them to hold key leadership positions are not only more inclusive and democratic, but, have advanced in both domestic and global affairs,” he stated.

Speaking, the Resident Coordinator/Humanitarian United Nations Mr Edward Kallo said over 50% of Nigeria’s population are women adding that “Women are active and contributory factors to positive change in the society.”

“According to statistics, 50% of our population are women and the projected estimation of the Nigeria population at 2030 would be 264 Million and at 2050 it would be about 410 Million and then women would be seem more important in the economic transformation development which is one of the way we can enhance their invasion by empowering them to have a strong say in political development of their country and as well add to national development.

A wider range of perspective is brought to the politics gear in decision making. To feel in this gap, the UNDP has taken steps to support the Commission with their activities around the globe,” he added.
