NHRC, UNHCR train human rights monitors in North-east

Disturbed by the increasing rate of human rights violation in the North east states of Borno, Yobe and Adamawa, the National Human Right Commission (NHRC) has change its focus in the North-east from protection issue to human right abuses.

Consequently, the commission has trained human rights monitors to document human right issues in the region.

Speaking at the training workshop organised by the NHRC in collaboration with United Nation High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) in Yola Tuesday, its executive secretary Mr. Tony Ojukwu said that the insurgency and counter insurgency operation have led to grave human tight abuses and humanitarian issues in the region.

He said this necessitated the need to focus on the region which will afford the commission the opportunity to monitor and document human rights issues in the region with a view to finding solutions .

According to him, “In 2015 the NHRC and UNHCR entered into a yearly renewable partnership to monitored and report protection issues relating to DPS and returnees in Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Nasarawa, Plateau, Taraba, Yobe and FCT which subsequently reduced to six states but in 2018 the numbers of the state again reduced to Borno, Yobe and Adamawa and this remain so in 2020, hence the need to train monitors of the project.”

Also speaking, the head of mission of United Nation High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) in Adamawa state, Mrs. Eline Valeries Amosun,  urged participants to redoubled their monitoring efforts and go out to the field to collect human right violations reports.

She also called for all hands to be on deck to tackle these challenges.
