Niger Assembly makes U-turn, swears in PDP member-elect

The Niger state House of Assembly would at its next sitting swear in the member from Agaie constituency elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic  Party (PDP), Alhaji Abdullahi Yahaya, the speaker, Abdullahi Bawa Wuse, has said.

The speaker stated this yesterday in a press briefing in Minna on Friday.

The member-elect is said to have court issues at the time of inauguration of the Assembly last month and has since be struggling to get into the hallow chamber despite a valid court order and INEC certificate of return.

The speaker said the delay in swearing in the Agaie constituency member was not deliberate, but due to some mistakes made by INEC in the list of members forwarded to the Assembly.

He said the on-going renovation work at the Assembly gallery and chamber has not enabled members to sit, adding, “We also have pressing issues apart from the swearing-in of the Agaie member to handle. We are making arrangement to sit so that we can resolve these issues.”

He said it was unfortunate that some politicians attempted to cause “unnecessary crisis over the matter,” adding that “it is not true that the member-elect has not been sworn in because he is of the PDP.”

Wuse appealed to Agaie constituents to remain calm and avoid acts capable of causing breakdown of law and order.
