Despite over N16 billion debt owed Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) by consumers in Niger state, the company has improved electricity supply in the state from 4.3 kilowatts per hour to 7.4kwh from January to November this year, company Head, Public Relations, Ahmed Shekarau, has said.
Shekarau stated this at the weekend in an interview with journalists, explaining that the company was only able to recover N450 million out of N1.6 billion daily distribution to the state in general.
This, according to him, constituted daunting challenge in the company’s effort at providing steady electricity to the state, a case which has attracted the youth’s anger in the state, vowing to protest epileptic power supply in the state.
Shekarau, however, appealed to the conveners of the planned protest against the company to shelve the plan and allow for dialogue, adding that the problem could only be solved through dialogue.
He said that there have been series of meetings with the conveners, lead by Comrade Etsu aimed at resolving the issue adding that the security situation in the country should be considered by the protesters.
Meanwhile, conveners of the protest tagged #PowerPowerState the YouthLeadNigeria, in a statement in Minna, said the meeting between it and the AEDC was deadlocked.
The group said there was no going back on the protest and urged residents of Niger state to dress in red shirts to shut down AEDC office in Minna today to protest incessant power outage in the state.
The organisers who have adopted red outfits as dress code for the protest, urged Nigerlites, including student unions, groups and associations of artisan to adhere strictly to the dress code, adding that the YouthLeadNigeria will not identify with any individual or group of individuals who failed to comply.
