Niger seeks UNICEF intervention on education infrastructure

Governor Abubakar Sani Bello of Niger state has appealed to the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) to “quickly intervene in the infrastructure development of education in the state.”
Bello stated this yesterday while signing the last trench of four-year work plan of N646.4 million memorandum of understanding (MoU) with UNICEF in Minna.
He expressed concern over the state of decay of education infrastructure in the state adding that despite the much government was doing to revamp the sector, several schools still lack infrastructure.
He urged UNICEF to also direct its intervention in education in the state to infrastructure, while commending the Fund for its interventions in child enrolment and girl child education.
He assured of prompt payment of government counterpart funds to UNICEF in enhancing the development of education in the state, adding that the state government had completely renovated nine boarding schools in the state.
In his remarks, UNICEF Field Office Kaduna, Dr Idris Baba said that the work plan was to guide implementation of UNICEF programmes in the state.
He said over 9, 000 children “stand to benefit from the UNICEF programmes covered by the MoU” and advocated for more legislations and commitment of the state government for effective and efficient implementation of children’s programme.
He said additional 467 primary and 214 secondary schools had been scheduled to benefit from the programme in the area of improved facilities in education in the state.
