Niger vigilantes committed to war against bandits – Commander

Members of the vigilante group in Niger state remain irrevocably committed to the fight against banditry and the eradication of other criminal elements in the state.

The state commander of the vigilante group, Mallam Nasir Mohammed Manta, stated this in Minna at the weekend in a press briefing.

He said vigilantes have been working in synergy with other security agencies especially the army, police and civil defence, which he explained has been yielding positive results.

He regretted that many of his members have died in action during operations adding that “however, we have eliminated several more bandits this year”.

He said, “We have also killed and arrested many bandits in separate engagements in parts of Niger state, some of whom have been handed over to police for necessary action.”

He commended the Niger state government and local government councils for their support in ensuring the success of the battle against bandits in the state.

The commander debunked reports alleging that some members of vigilante in Niger  attacked and vandalised a divisional police station in Kagara headquarters of Rafi local government area.

According to him, “As responsible people my members will never engage in such an act. I want to advise journalists to always cross-check their facts to avoid engaging in character assassination or libel.”
